Course overview
Every year, many Indian students study MBBS abroad because government seats in India are limited and private college fees are high. Studying abroad can be a good option, but only if you choose the right university and follow Indian rules from day one.
In many countries the degree is not called "MBBS". It may be called MD, General Medicine or Doctor of Medicine. The name does not matter much. What matters is whether the course meets the rules of the National Medical Commission (NMC), if you want to come back and practise in India.
What NMC rules say for practising in India
Under the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, a student who completes a medical degree abroad can get permanent registration in India only if:
- The course was at least 54 months long.
- The student did an internship of at least 12 months in the same foreign university.
- The whole course was taught in English.
- The student studied the subjects listed by NMC.
- The student is registered or eligible for a licence to practise medicine in that country, at par with the country's own citizens.
- The student completes a 12-month supervised internship in India after applying to NMC.
- The student clears the licensing exam conducted for foreign medical graduates.
The whole foreign course must be completed within 10 years of joining. The entire course, training and internship must be done outside India at the same foreign university; no part of it can be done in India. These rules apply to students who joined from 18 November 2021 onwards.
Before you choose a university
- Ask for the course duration and internship plan in writing.
- Check that every year, including clinical years, is taught in English.
- Check where clinical training happens and whether patients speak the local language.
- Read the latest NMC public notices before paying any fee.
Eligibility & entry requirements
To study MBBS abroad and later practise in India, an Indian student generally needs:
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with the minimum marks needed for MBBS admission in India. The required percentage is lower for reserved categories. Check the current NEET-UG information bulletin for your category.
- NEET-UG qualified. Since 2018, qualifying NEET is compulsory for Indian students who want to study medicine abroad and practise in India. The Supreme Court upheld this rule in 2025. For admission abroad, a NEET result is valid for three years from the date the result is declared.
- Age: at least 17 years by 31 December of the admission year.
- A valid passport.
Is MBBS abroad possible without NEET?
Some foreign universities may give admission without NEET. But if you do not qualify NEET, you will not be eligible to practise medicine in India after the course. If you plan to work as a doctor in India, qualify NEET before taking admission.
Each university also has its own entry rules, such as minimum marks, an entrance test or an interview. Always check the current rules of the university you choose.
How to apply
- Talk to a counsellor. Share your NEET score, Class 12 marks, budget and preferred countries.
- Shortlist universities. Compare the course duration, teaching language, clinical training, hostel and total cost, not just the tuition fee.
- Check NMC rules. Make sure the course structure meets the conditions for practising in India.
- Apply. Send your passport, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, NEET scorecard and photos. Some universities ask for more documents.
- Get your admission letter. Read the fee schedule and refund rules carefully before you pay.
- Apply for the student visa. Visa rules and documents differ by country.
- Prepare for travel. Plan your hostel, medical insurance, money transfer and pre-departure briefing.
Costs you should plan for
Tuition is only one part. Also plan for hostel, food, medical insurance, visa and travel, books and local transport. Ask each university for a written yearly fee list in its own currency, because exchange rates change.
Planning MBBS abroad for the 2027-28 intake
If you want to start MBBS abroad in 2027, your plan starts with NEET-UG 2027. A qualifying NEET result is compulsory for Indian students who want to practise in India after a foreign medical degree. NEET has been held on the first Sunday of May in recent years, but NTA had not announced the 2027 date when this guide was updated. Watch neet.nta.nic.in for the official bulletin.
- October 2026 to January 2027: shortlist countries and universities, check that each course meets the NMC FMGL Regulations 2021, and get your passport ready.
- February to April 2027: register for NEET-UG 2027. Universities in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Italy run their own entrance tests or document reviews, often months before the course starts, so check their dates now.
- May to July 2027: appear for NEET, get your result, then apply. Most universities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and Moldova accept applications in summer.
- August to October 2027: admission letter, visa, travel and joining. Most classes start in September or October 2027.
Your NEET result can be used for foreign admission for three years, so a NEET 2025 or 2026 result may also be valid for 2027 admission. Confirm this with your counsellor before you apply.
Career pathways
After MBBS abroad, students usually have these choices:
- Practise in India. Clear the licensing exam for foreign medical graduates and complete the 12-month internship in India. Today this exam is the FMGE, conducted by NBEMS. NMC plans to replace it with the National Exit Test (NExT), but as of October 2026 NExT has not started for foreign graduates. Check the latest NMC and NBEMS notices.
- Postgraduate study (MD/MS) in India, through the entrance exam that applies at that time.
- Work or study in another country, after clearing that country's own licensing exam and registration process.
A foreign medical degree does not automatically give you the right to practise in India or any other country. Admission to a university is not the same as permission to work as a doctor.

Your questions, answered.
Is NEET compulsory for MBBS abroad?
Yes, if you want to practise medicine in India later. Indian students must qualify NEET-UG before taking admission abroad. For foreign admission, the NEET result is valid for three years from the date it is declared.
Is a foreign MBBS degree valid in India?
It can be, if the course meets NMC rules. The course must be at least 54 months long, taught fully in English, include a 12-month internship in the same university, and you must be eligible for a licence in that country. You then need to clear the licensing exam and complete a 12-month internship in India.
Are foreign medical universities "NMC approved"?
NMC does not publish a list of approved foreign universities. Instead, it sets conditions that your course and degree must meet. Check those conditions for the exact course you join.
How long is MBBS abroad?
It depends on the country and university. To meet NMC rules, the course must be at least 54 months long, plus a 12-month internship in the same university. You must finish the course within 10 years of joining.
What is FMGE and NExT?
FMGE is the screening exam that foreign medical graduates take to practise in India. NMC plans to replace it with NExT. As of October 2026, foreign graduates still take FMGE. Always check the latest NMC notice.
How much does MBBS abroad cost?
It differs a lot by country, city and university. Add tuition, hostel, food, insurance, visa and travel to get the real total. See each university page for its fee details and ask for the latest fee list in writing.
Can I study MBBS abroad after Class 12?
Yes. MBBS abroad is an undergraduate course, so you can apply after Class 12 if you meet the subject marks, age and NEET conditions.
How should I compare medical universities abroad?
Compare the course duration, teaching language in every year, clinical training, internship, hostel, safety and total cost. Ask for current documents from the university before you pay.
