Nursing in Moldova guide

Thinking of nursing in Moldova? Learn how nursing is taught there, why language matters, and how to plan registration before you choose.

Nursing education in Moldova

Moldova trains nurses mainly through medical colleges and its national medical university system, for its own healthcare workforce. Teaching is mostly in Romanian, with some programmes in Russian. We did not find an English-taught nursing degree for international students in Moldova when we checked in October 2026.

The Moldovan government's Study in Moldova portal lists English-taught programmes in several subjects and advises students to confirm whether a whole programme is taught in English, because some are only partly in English.

What this means for Indian students

  • You would likely need to learn Romanian to a good level before or during the course.
  • Clinical training would be with Romanian- or Russian-speaking patients.
  • Moldova follows European credit systems, which can make course records easier to compare, but each country's nursing regulator still decides on registration.

Important things to check

  1. Teaching language of every year, and whether a language preparatory year is available.
  2. Clinical hours and the hospitals used.
  3. Registration goal: India (INC equivalency), Moldova, or another European country.
  4. Residence permit rules for international students.

Who should consider Nursing in Moldova?

Nursing in Moldova may suit students who are interested in Europe and willing to learn Romanian. For an English-taught nursing degree, other destinations are usually more practical.

Admission is not the same as permission to work as a nurse

A nursing degree from Moldova can be a good foundation, but getting admission is different from getting permission to work as a registered nurse. Each country has its own nursing regulator. Before you choose a course, decide where you want to work after graduation: in India, in Moldova or in a third country. The right course depends on this answer.

If you want to work as a nurse in India

Indian citizens with a foreign nursing qualification must get equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council (INC) before they can register with a State Nursing Registration Council. INC examines each case individually. For this:

  • Your university or board must fill in INC's transcript form and send it directly to INC, showing your subjects and the theory and practical hours.
  • INC charges an equivalency fee, currently paid by demand draft.
  • INC's Equivalence Committee reviews your course and informs you of its decision.

Keep every syllabus, transcript and record of clinical hours safely from the first year. Missing records can delay registration later.

If you want to work as a nurse abroad

Countries that recruit nurses usually require registration with their own nursing regulator, an English test and sometimes a licensing exam. Your course content and clinical hours must meet their rules. Check these requirements before you join any programme.

Eligibility for Nursing in Moldova

  • For a bachelor's degree: Class 12 pass, usually with Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and the university's minimum marks.
  • For a post-basic or bridging course: a nursing diploma such as GNM, and sometimes registration and work experience.
  • For a master's degree: a bachelor's degree in nursing and often professional registration.
  • Proof of English for English-taught courses, such as IELTS, or another proof the university accepts.
  • A valid passport and, in some cases, a medical fitness certificate.

Documents usually required

  • Passport and photographs
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates
  • Nursing diploma or degree certificates and transcripts (for post-basic and master's courses)
  • English test result, if needed
  • Medical fitness certificate

Nursing admission process for Moldova

  1. Decide where you want to work after graduation.
  2. Shortlist programmes by teaching language, clinical hours, recognition and total cost.
  3. Apply with your documents and attend any interview.
  4. Read the offer letter and fee schedule carefully.
  5. Apply for the student visa and plan your accommodation.

Careers after Nursing

Nursing graduates can work in hospital wards, intensive care, community health, teaching or management, or go for higher studies. In every country, registration comes first. A degree alone does not guarantee registration, a job or a work visa. Read our Nursing abroad guide for more.

Planning your Nursing studies in Moldova

  • Before you leave: decide where you want to work as a nurse, confirm the teaching language and clinical hours, and arrange documents and visa.
  • First year: learn the local language, build strong basics in anatomy, physiology and nursing foundations, and start a file of all your records.
  • Middle years: focus on medical-surgical nursing, child health, community health and pharmacology, and use every clinical posting to build patient skills.
  • Final year: complete clinical rotations, collect your transcripts and records of clinical hours, and plan your registration steps.
  • After graduation: apply for registration in the country where you want to work, or for INC equivalency if you plan to work in India.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Choosing a course without a registration plan. Decide first where you want to work.
  2. Not checking clinical hours. Regulators look closely at practical training.
  3. Ignoring the language of patients. Good nursing depends on communication.
  4. Losing records. Keep your syllabus, transcripts and clinical logs safe from day one.
  5. Believing job guarantees. No course or consultant can guarantee registration or a job.

Nursing or another healthcare course?

Nursing is a hands-on caring profession with long shifts and close patient contact. If you enjoy helping people and can stay calm under pressure, nursing can be very rewarding. If you are more interested in diagnosis and treatment decisions, MBBS may suit you better; if you prefer laboratory or technical work, allied health courses may fit. Talk to a counsellor before deciding.

Paying for your studies in Moldova

Education loans

Many Indian families use an education loan for studies abroad. Banks and lenders usually ask for the admission letter, a cost estimate from the university, academic records, identity and address proof, and income documents of a co-applicant, usually a parent. Larger loans may need collateral. Interest rates, limits and repayment rules differ between lenders, so compare at least two or three offers and read the terms carefully.

Sending money abroad

Fees and living money are usually sent through a bank's foreign remittance service under the RBI's rules for education abroad. Keep the university's fee invoice and bank details ready, and always pay only to the university's official account. Never pay fees into a personal account.

Making a realistic budget

  • Write down tuition for every year, not just the first year.
  • Add hostel, food, transport, mobile, insurance, books and visa charges.
  • Add flights home at least once a year.
  • Keep 10–15% extra for exchange rate changes and emergencies.

Preparing for clinical training in Moldova

Clinical training is the heart of any nursing course. To get the most from it:

  • Learn medical words in the local language: body parts, symptoms, common medicines and instructions.
  • Keep a clinical diary of departments, hours and skills practised; it helps with registration later.
  • Ask questions to supervisors and senior nurses; they are your best teachers.
  • Follow infection control and safety rules carefully.
  • Look after yourself: shifts can be tiring, so sleep, eat well and stay in touch with friends and family.

Nursing in Moldova or in India?

  • In India: a BSc Nursing from an INC-recognised college leads directly to state registration.
  • Abroad: you gain international exposure, but registration in India needs INC equivalency, and language can be a challenge.
  • Cost and time: compare total cost and any extra language year before deciding.

Your application timeline for Nursing in Moldova

Starting early gives you more choices and less stress. Here is a simple timeline most students can follow. Exact dates depend on the university and intake, so confirm them with your counsellor.

  • 12 months before: talk to your family about budget and goals, and book a counselling session.
  • 9–10 months before: shortlist universities, check eligibility and start preparing for any tests you need.
  • 6–8 months before: get your passport ready if you do not have one, collect marksheets and certificates, and take English or entrance tests.
  • 4–6 months before: submit applications, attend interviews and compare offers.
  • 3–4 months before: accept your offer, pay the first fee only to the university's official account, and apply for an education loan if needed.
  • 2–3 months before: apply for the student visa, book medical tests and arrange document translations.
  • 1 month before: book flights, buy essentials, attend a pre-departure briefing and share your arrival details with the university.

If you are applying late, do not panic. Talk to a counsellor quickly, because some universities have later intakes or rolling admissions.

Living and studying in Moldova: what to expect

Moldova at a glance for students

Moldova is a small country in Eastern Europe, between Romania and Ukraine. Its capital and main student city is Chișinău. The official language is Romanian, and many people also understand Russian. The currency is the Moldovan leu (MDL). Moldova has been a candidate to join the European Union since 2022, and many of its universities follow European credit systems.

Moldova is not as well known among Indian students as Russia or Kazakhstan. This means smaller Indian communities, but also a quieter, European-style city life.

Weather and climate

Moldova has warm summers and cold winters with some snow, but winters are generally milder than in Russia or Central Asia. Spring and autumn are pleasant. Pack warm clothes for winter.

Language in daily life

Romanian is used in most offices and shops, and Russian is also common. Younger people in Chișinău may speak some English. If you plan practical training with local patients or companies, learning Romanian is very helpful. Ask your university about language classes.

Student visa and arrival

Indian students need a study visa for Moldova. The usual steps are:

  1. Apply to the university and receive your admission or enrolment letter.
  2. Apply for the study visa through the Moldovan authorities, following the university's instructions.
  3. After arrival, apply for your residence permit for studies with the help of the university.

The national Study in Moldova portal (studyinmd.mec.gov.md) explains programmes and procedures for international students.

Cost of living

Living costs in Moldova are usually lower than in Western Europe. Chișinău is the most expensive city in the country. Students live in university hostels or rented flats. Budget for accommodation, food, transport, mobile and internet, medical insurance and residence permit charges.

Safety and culture

Chișinău is generally calm and student-friendly. Moldovans value family, food and hospitality. Follow common safety practices, carry your documents and keep in touch with your university's international office.

Travelling from India

There are no direct flights from India to Chișinău. Students usually fly through a European or Middle Eastern hub. Plan your route with the university and ask about airport pickup.

Practical tips for students in Moldova

Where students live

Universities in Chișinău offer student hostels, and many international students also rent flats in groups. Chișinău is compact, so most areas are reachable by trolleybus or minibus.

What to pack for Moldova

  • Warm clothes for winter and light clothes for summer.
  • A pressure cooker and Indian spices; Indian groceries are harder to find than in bigger destinations.
  • Prescribed medicines with prescriptions.
  • Copies of all documents and a universal plug adapter (European two-pin sockets).

Your first week: a simple checklist

  1. Reach the university and collect your hostel room keys.
  2. Submit your passport and documents to the international office for registration.
  3. Buy a local SIM card and set up mobile data.
  4. Save emergency numbers: the university contact, the hostel warden and the Indian Embassy.
  5. Find the nearest grocery shop, pharmacy and bus or metro stop.
  6. Join the Indian student group so you can ask seniors for help.
  7. Start your residence permit application with the university's help as soon as possible.
  8. Call your family and share your new address and contacts.

Learning Romanian in Moldova: simple tips

Learning the local language is one of the best things you can do for your studies and daily life in Moldova. You do not need to be perfect. Aim to handle shopping, travel, basic conversations and, for healthcare courses, simple talks with patients.

  • Start before you travel. Learn the alphabet, greetings and numbers using free apps and videos.
  • Attend every language class your university offers, especially in the first year.
  • Practise daily for 20–30 minutes. Small, regular practice works better than long sessions once a week.
  • Speak with local people in shops, on campus and in hostels. Most people are happy when you try.
  • Learn subject words for your course, such as body parts and symptoms for healthcare, or business terms for BBA and MBA.
  • Romanian uses the Latin alphabet, so reading signs becomes easy quickly.

Planning Nursing in Moldova for the 2027-28 intake

Nursing intakes differ by country, so start early. For a September 2027 start in the United Kingdom, apply through UCAS. The main UCAS deadline for full consideration usually falls in late January 2027. Canada also mainly starts in September, and many Canadian nursing programmes close applications between December 2026 and March 2027. Australia has intakes around February and July, so you can aim for July 2027 or February 2028. In Germany, the winter semester starts in October, and you will need German language skills for most nursing degrees.

  • Now to December 2026: choose your country, check entry rules, and book IELTS, PTE or a German language course.
  • January to April 2027: submit applications, references and personal statements, and attend interviews.
  • May to August 2027: accept your offer, pay the deposit to the university only, arrange your funds and apply for the visa.

Remember that if you plan to work in India later, you will need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council.
