Nursing in Kazakhstan guide

Kazakhstan has medical universities that train nurses, and PSP currently lists nursing options there. Learn about courses, teaching language, registration and admission steps.

Why consider Nursing in Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan's medical universities train doctors and nurses, and several already teach international students in English. For Indian students, the advantages are an established medical education system, moderate living costs and flights between India and Almaty.

Nursing options in Kazakhstan

  • Universities on PSP's list: PSP currently lists Astana Medical University and Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University for nursing. Confirm the exact nursing programme, its teaching language and intake with us before you apply.
  • Nazarbayev University (Astana) offers an English-taught Bachelor in Nursing, but it is a completion route for already licensed nurses, not a programme straight after Class 12.
  • Other universities, such as South Kazakhstan Medical Academy and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, are listed by some agencies for nursing. Check details directly with the university.

Course types

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing after Class 12.
  • Completion or bridging programmes for nurses who already hold a diploma and licence.
  • Master's programmes for nurses who want leadership, teaching or research roles.

Important things to check

  1. Entry route: Is the programme for Class 12 students or for already-qualified nurses?
  2. Teaching language: English, Russian or Kazakh, and in which years?
  3. Clinical training: hospitals used, hours and supervision. Patients speak Kazakh or Russian.
  4. Registration goal: Will the course help you register in India (through INC equivalency) or in another country?
  5. Documents: Will the university send the INC transcript form directly if needed?

Who should consider Nursing in Kazakhstan?

Nursing in Kazakhstan suits students who want an English-taught option in an established medical university, can adapt to cold winters, and will learn Russian or Kazakh for clinical work. Diploma holders who want to upgrade their qualification may also find bridging routes.

Costs to plan for

Ask for written fees for every year, usually in US dollars or tenge. Add hostel, food, medical insurance, visa and registration charges, books, winter clothing and flights.

Admission is not the same as permission to work as a nurse

A nursing degree from Kazakhstan can be a good foundation, but getting admission is different from getting permission to work as a registered nurse. Each country has its own nursing regulator. Before you choose a course, decide where you want to work after graduation: in India, in Kazakhstan or in a third country. The right course depends on this answer.

If you want to work as a nurse in India

Indian citizens with a foreign nursing qualification must get equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council (INC) before they can register with a State Nursing Registration Council. INC examines each case individually. For this:

  • Your university or board must fill in INC's transcript form and send it directly to INC, showing your subjects and the theory and practical hours.
  • INC charges an equivalency fee, currently paid by demand draft.
  • INC's Equivalence Committee reviews your course and informs you of its decision.

Keep every syllabus, transcript and record of clinical hours safely from the first year. Missing records can delay registration later.

If you want to work as a nurse abroad

Countries that recruit nurses usually require registration with their own nursing regulator, an English test and sometimes a licensing exam. Your course content and clinical hours must meet their rules. Check these requirements before you join any programme.

Eligibility for Nursing in Kazakhstan

  • For a bachelor's degree: Class 12 pass, usually with Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and the university's minimum marks.
  • For a post-basic or bridging course: a nursing diploma such as GNM, and sometimes registration and work experience.
  • For a master's degree: a bachelor's degree in nursing and often professional registration.
  • Proof of English for English-taught courses, such as IELTS, or another proof the university accepts.
  • A valid passport and, in some cases, a medical fitness certificate.

Documents usually required

  • Passport and photographs
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates
  • Nursing diploma or degree certificates and transcripts (for post-basic and master's courses)
  • English test result, if needed
  • Medical fitness certificate

Nursing admission process for Kazakhstan

  1. Decide where you want to work after graduation.
  2. Shortlist programmes by teaching language, clinical hours, recognition and total cost.
  3. Apply with your documents and attend any interview.
  4. Read the offer letter and fee schedule carefully.
  5. Apply for the student visa and plan your accommodation.

Careers after Nursing

Nursing graduates can work in hospital wards, intensive care, community health, teaching or management, or go for higher studies. In every country, registration comes first. A degree alone does not guarantee registration, a job or a work visa. Read our Nursing abroad guide for more.

Planning your Nursing studies in Kazakhstan

  • Before you leave: decide where you want to work as a nurse, confirm the teaching language and clinical hours, and arrange documents and visa.
  • First year: learn the local language, build strong basics in anatomy, physiology and nursing foundations, and start a file of all your records.
  • Middle years: focus on medical-surgical nursing, child health, community health and pharmacology, and use every clinical posting to build patient skills.
  • Final year: complete clinical rotations, collect your transcripts and records of clinical hours, and plan your registration steps.
  • After graduation: apply for registration in the country where you want to work, or for INC equivalency if you plan to work in India.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Choosing a course without a registration plan. Decide first where you want to work.
  2. Not checking clinical hours. Regulators look closely at practical training.
  3. Ignoring the language of patients. Good nursing depends on communication.
  4. Losing records. Keep your syllabus, transcripts and clinical logs safe from day one.
  5. Believing job guarantees. No course or consultant can guarantee registration or a job.

Nursing or another healthcare course?

Nursing is a hands-on caring profession with long shifts and close patient contact. If you enjoy helping people and can stay calm under pressure, nursing can be very rewarding. If you are more interested in diagnosis and treatment decisions, MBBS may suit you better; if you prefer laboratory or technical work, allied health courses may fit. Talk to a counsellor before deciding.

Paying for your studies in Kazakhstan

Education loans

Many Indian families use an education loan for studies abroad. Banks and lenders usually ask for the admission letter, a cost estimate from the university, academic records, identity and address proof, and income documents of a co-applicant, usually a parent. Larger loans may need collateral. Interest rates, limits and repayment rules differ between lenders, so compare at least two or three offers and read the terms carefully.

Sending money abroad

Fees and living money are usually sent through a bank's foreign remittance service under the RBI's rules for education abroad. Keep the university's fee invoice and bank details ready, and always pay only to the university's official account. Never pay fees into a personal account.

Making a realistic budget

  • Write down tuition for every year, not just the first year.
  • Add hostel, food, transport, mobile, insurance, books and visa charges.
  • Add flights home at least once a year.
  • Keep 10–15% extra for exchange rate changes and emergencies.

Preparing for clinical training in Kazakhstan

Clinical training is the heart of any nursing course. To get the most from it:

  • Learn medical words in the local language: body parts, symptoms, common medicines and instructions.
  • Keep a clinical diary of departments, hours and skills practised; it helps with registration later.
  • Ask questions to supervisors and senior nurses; they are your best teachers.
  • Follow infection control and safety rules carefully.
  • Look after yourself: shifts can be tiring, so sleep, eat well and stay in touch with friends and family.

Nursing in Kazakhstan or in India?

  • In India: a BSc Nursing from an INC-recognised college leads directly to state registration.
  • Abroad: you gain international exposure, but registration in India needs INC equivalency, and language can be a challenge.
  • Cost and time: compare total cost and any extra language year before deciding.

Your application timeline for Nursing in Kazakhstan

Starting early gives you more choices and less stress. Here is a simple timeline most students can follow. Exact dates depend on the university and intake, so confirm them with your counsellor.

  • 12 months before: talk to your family about budget and goals, and book a counselling session.
  • 9–10 months before: shortlist universities, check eligibility and start preparing for any tests you need.
  • 6–8 months before: get your passport ready if you do not have one, collect marksheets and certificates, and take English or entrance tests.
  • 4–6 months before: submit applications, attend interviews and compare offers.
  • 3–4 months before: accept your offer, pay the first fee only to the university's official account, and apply for an education loan if needed.
  • 2–3 months before: apply for the student visa, book medical tests and arrange document translations.
  • 1 month before: book flights, buy essentials, attend a pre-departure briefing and share your arrival details with the university.

If you are applying late, do not panic. Talk to a counsellor quickly, because some universities have later intakes or rolling admissions.

Living and studying in Kazakhstan: what to expect

Kazakhstan at a glance for students

Kazakhstan is a large country in Central Asia. Its capital is Astana, and its largest city is Almaty. Other student cities include Shymkent, Aktobe, Semey and Karaganda. The state language is Kazakh, and Russian is also widely used, especially in cities. The currency is the Kazakh tenge (KZT).

Kazakhstan has welcomed international students for many years, and Indian students are a familiar group in Almaty, Astana and other university cities. The country is modern in many ways, with good roads, shopping centres and mobile internet, but daily life still feels very different from India.

Weather and climate

Kazakhstan has a continental climate: hot summers and cold winters. Astana is one of the coldest capital cities in the world, with strong winds in winter. Almaty, near the mountains in the south-east, is milder and greener, though winters still bring snow. Shymkent in the south is warmer. Pack warm clothes, and buy heavy winter wear locally if needed.

Language in daily life

In most cities you will hear Russian more than English. Shops, transport and hospital patients mostly use Russian or Kazakh. Universities that teach international students in English usually also offer Russian or Kazakh language classes. Try to learn the basics early. It helps you make friends, travel safely and talk to patients or clients during practical training.

Student visa and arrival

Indian students who come to Kazakhstan to study need a student visa. The usual steps are:

  1. Apply to the university and receive your admission letter.
  2. The university arranges a visa invitation through the relevant authorities.
  3. Apply for the student visa at the Embassy of Kazakhstan with your passport, invitation, photos and the documents they ask for.
  4. After arrival, complete registration with the help of the university's international office.

Do not travel to study on a tourist visa. Follow the university's visa instructions exactly, and keep copies of all documents.

Cost of living

Living costs in Kazakhstan are usually moderate. Almaty and Astana cost more than smaller cities. Most students live in university hostels or share flats, cook their own food and use buses. Budget for hostel or rent, food, mobile and internet, transport, medical insurance, winter clothes and books. Keep some money aside for registration and document charges in the first months.

Safety and culture

Kazakhstan is generally calm and welcoming to students. Respect local customs, follow hostel rules and carry your documents. Kazakh culture values hospitality and respect for elders. Food is mostly meat-based, but vegetarian options and Indian restaurants are available in the bigger cities, and many students cook Indian food in their hostel kitchens.

Travelling from India

There are flights between India and Almaty, and connections to Astana and other cities. Ask your university about airport pickup for your first arrival, and share your flight details with them in advance.

Practical tips for students in Kazakhstan

Where students live

Most universities offer hostels for international students, with shared rooms and kitchens. In Almaty and Astana, some students rent flats with friends after the first year. Rents are higher in these two cities than in Aktobe, Semey or Shymkent. Always register your address as the university advises.

What to pack for Kazakhstan

  • Warm inner wear and sweaters. Buy a heavy winter jacket locally, especially if you will live in Astana.
  • Light cotton clothes for the hot summer months.
  • A pressure cooker, Indian spices and some ready-to-cook food.
  • Prescribed medicines with prescriptions.
  • Copies of all documents and a universal plug adapter (European two-pin sockets).

Your first week: a simple checklist

  1. Reach the university and collect your hostel room keys.
  2. Submit your passport and documents to the international office for registration.
  3. Buy a local SIM card and set up mobile data.
  4. Save emergency numbers: the university contact, the hostel warden and the Indian Embassy.
  5. Find the nearest grocery shop, pharmacy and bus or metro stop.
  6. Join the Indian student group so you can ask seniors for help.
  7. Learn basic Russian greetings and the bus routes between your hostel and university.
  8. Call your family and share your new address and contacts.

Learning Russian and Kazakh in Kazakhstan: simple tips

Learning the local language is one of the best things you can do for your studies and daily life in Kazakhstan. You do not need to be perfect. Aim to handle shopping, travel, basic conversations and, for healthcare courses, simple talks with patients.

  • Start before you travel. Learn the alphabet, greetings and numbers using free apps and videos.
  • Attend every language class your university offers, especially in the first year.
  • Practise daily for 20–30 minutes. Small, regular practice works better than long sessions once a week.
  • Speak with local people in shops, on campus and in hostels. Most people are happy when you try.
  • Learn subject words for your course, such as body parts and symptoms for healthcare, or business terms for BBA and MBA.
  • Start with Russian, which is used most in cities, and learn some Kazakh greetings to show respect.

Planning Nursing in Kazakhstan for the 2027-28 intake

Nursing intakes differ by country, so start early. For a September 2027 start in the United Kingdom, apply through UCAS. The main UCAS deadline for full consideration usually falls in late January 2027. Canada also mainly starts in September, and many Canadian nursing programmes close applications between December 2026 and March 2027. Australia has intakes around February and July, so you can aim for July 2027 or February 2028. In Germany, the winter semester starts in October, and you will need German language skills for most nursing degrees.

  • Now to December 2026: choose your country, check entry rules, and book IELTS, PTE or a German language course.
  • January to April 2027: submit applications, references and personal statements, and attend interviews.
  • May to August 2027: accept your offer, pay the deposit to the university only, arrange your funds and apply for the visa.

Remember that if you plan to work in India later, you will need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council.
