MBA in France guide
France is home to globally ranked business schools such as HEC Paris and EDHEC. Here is how Indian professionals can plan an English-taught MBA in France for the 2027-28 intake.
Why an MBA in France
French business schools are among the most respected in Europe. Their MBAs are taught in English, have very international classes, and connect students with companies across Europe. France also offers post-study options for master's-level graduates.

- After the offer: complete the Campus France process and apply for the long-stay student visa.
Costs
Top French MBAs are expensive. Ask for the 2027-28 fee and scholarships. Add living costs, especially rent in the Paris region, and insurance.
After the MBA
Graduates may apply for a temporary residence permit to look for work. France has also announced visa facilities for Indian alumni of French higher education. Check current rules with Campus France India.
HEC Paris or EDHEC: how to compare
HEC Paris is one of the most selective business schools in Europe, near Paris, with a global brand and a large alumni network. EDHEC's Global MBA in Nice offers a smaller class on the Mediterranean coast. Compare programme length and formats, class size and experience, career outcomes, fees and scholarships.
Who should consider an MBA in France
France suits experienced professionals who want a top European MBA brand, are aiming for international roles in consulting, finance, luxury or technology, and can invest significantly in tuition and living costs.
Learning French
You do not need French for the MBA, but learning it helps with internships, networking and life outside the campus. Many schools offer French classes during the programme.
Master in Management as an alternative
French business schools are also known for their Master in Management (MiM) programmes, designed for graduates with little or no work experience. If you are early in your career, compare the MiM with the MBA before you apply.
Your 2027-28 checklist for an MBA in France
- Write down your goal: the role, industry and country you want after the MBA.
- Check each school's work experience expectations and class profile.
- Book the GMAT or GRE (if needed) and an English test with enough time for a retake.
- Note the application rounds for 2027-28 and aim for an early round.
- Prepare your CV, essays and two strong references.
- Ask about scholarships, payment plans and the total cost of the programme.
- Check the award type and visa requirements before you accept an offer.
What an MBA year in France is like
An MBA is intense. Expect core courses in the first months (finance, accounting, strategy, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour and data analysis), followed by electives in your chosen area. Much of the learning happens through case studies, where you discuss real business problems in class, and through group projects with classmates from different countries and industries.
Outside class, you will attend company talks, networking events, career workshops and club activities. Many programmes include a consulting project with a real company, an international study trip or an internship. Career services start working with you from the first weeks, so have your CV ready and a clear idea of the roles you want.
How to prepare before you go
- Refresh basic accounting, statistics and Excel skills before the course starts.
- Update your LinkedIn profile and list companies you want to target.
- Speak to alumni of the programme about the workload and career results.
- Save enough money for the full programme and a few months of job search after it.
- Read business news about France and its main industries.
What an MBA involves
An MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a postgraduate course for people who want to grow into management roles. You study strategy, finance, marketing, operations, leadership and data-based decision making, usually with case studies, group projects and sometimes an internship. In France, as elsewhere, check whether a programme is a true MBA or a different master's degree in management.
MBA or Master in Management?
An MBA usually expects some work experience. A Master in Management (MiM) or MSc in Management is usually for fresh graduates. The subjects can look similar, but the class profile, teaching style and career outcomes are different.

Is a foreign MBA valid in India?
Employers judge an MBA mainly by the school, your skills and your experience. For higher studies or government jobs in India, you may need an equivalence certificate from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which has handled foreign degree equivalence since April 2025.
Careers after an MBA
MBA graduates work in management, consulting, finance, marketing, operations or their own business. Results depend a lot on your past experience and network. An MBA does not guarantee a job, a promotion, a salary or a work visa. Read our MBA abroad guide for more.
How to choose an MBA in France
- Your goal: career switch, promotion, starting a business or working in a new region.
- Programme format: one-year or two-year, full-time, part-time or executive.
- Class profile: average work experience and the mix of nationalities.
- Accreditation: recognition in its own country, plus any international business school accreditation.
- Career support: internships, alumni network and published job reports.
- Total cost and return: fees, living costs and the income you give up while studying.
Preparing a strong MBA application
- CV: show your achievements with numbers, not just job duties.
- Essays: explain clearly why you want an MBA, why now and why this programme.
- References: ask managers who know your work well.
- Tests: prepare early for GMAT or GRE and English tests if required.
- Interview: practise speaking about your career story and goals.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing an MBA without a clear goal.
- Confusing an MBA with other master's degrees.
- Ignoring accreditation and alumni outcomes.
- Underestimating total cost.
- Believing job or visa guarantees.
Paying for your studies in France
Education loans
Many Indian families use an education loan for studies abroad. Banks and lenders usually ask for the admission letter, a cost estimate from the university, academic records, identity and address proof, and income documents of a co-applicant, usually a parent. Larger loans may need collateral. Interest rates, limits and repayment rules differ between lenders, so compare at least two or three offers and read the terms carefully.
Sending money abroad
Fees and living money are usually sent through a bank's foreign remittance service under the RBI's rules for education abroad. Keep the university's fee invoice and bank details ready, and always pay only to the university's official account. Never pay fees into a personal account.
Making a realistic budget
- Write down tuition for every year, not just the first year.
- Add hostel, food, transport, mobile, insurance, books and visa charges.
- Add flights home at least once a year.
- Keep 10–15% extra for exchange rate changes and emergencies.
GMAT and GRE explained simply
- GMAT: a test designed for business schools, covering quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and data insights.
- GRE: a general graduate test accepted by many business schools as an alternative to the GMAT.
Many business schools in France and nearby regions waive these tests for applicants with strong academic records or work experience, while others require them. Check each school's rules before you start preparing.
Scholarships and funding for an MBA
- Merit scholarships: based on your academic record, test scores or work achievements.
- Need-based support: offered by some schools based on financial need.
- Employer sponsorship: some companies support employees who study part-time or return after the MBA.
- Education loans: from banks and lenders in India.
Read scholarship conditions carefully, such as minimum grades, and do not count on a scholarship until you receive it in writing.
MBA in France or in India?
- Abroad: international classmates, exposure to a new market and a global network.
- In India: strong links with Indian employers and often lower cost.
- Your goal: choose the option that best fits where you want to work after the MBA.
Your application timeline for MBA in France
Starting early gives you more choices and less stress. Here is a simple timeline most students can follow. Exact dates depend on the university and intake, so confirm them with your counsellor.
- 12 months before: talk to your family about budget and goals, and book a counselling session.
- 9–10 months before: shortlist universities, check eligibility and start preparing for any tests you need.
- 6–8 months before: get your passport ready if you do not have one, collect marksheets and certificates, and take English or entrance tests.
- 4–6 months before: submit applications, attend interviews and compare offers.
- 3–4 months before: accept your offer, pay the first fee only to the university's official account, and apply for an education loan if needed.
- 2–3 months before: apply for the student visa, book medical tests and arrange document translations.
- 1 month before: book flights, buy essentials, attend a pre-departure briefing and share your arrival details with the university.
If you are applying late, do not panic. Talk to a counsellor quickly, because some universities have later intakes or rolling admissions.
Living and studying in France: what to expect
France at a glance for students
France is home to some of Europe's best-known business schools. Its capital is Paris, and other student cities include Lyon, Lille, Nice, Toulouse and Bordeaux. The language is French and the currency is the euro (EUR). France is in the European Union and the Schengen area.
Most international MBA programmes are taught fully in English, but learning basic French helps with daily life, internships and building a career in France.
Student visa through Campus France
Indian students usually start their visa process through Campus France India using the "Études en France" online procedure. After you get admission, you complete your Campus France file and interview, and then apply for a long-stay student visa (VLS-TS) through the visa application centre. After arrival, you validate the visa online. You will need your admission letter, proof of funds, accommodation details and passport.
Living costs and accommodation
Paris is expensive, especially for rent. Cities such as Lille, Nice and Lyon can be somewhat cheaper. Students may be able to apply for housing assistance (CAF) depending on their situation. Plan for rent, food, transport, insurance and the student life contribution (CVEC) where it applies.
Work and career
Students in France may work part-time up to a yearly limit. After a master's-level degree, graduates may be able to apply for a temporary residence permit to look for work or start a business. France has also announced visa facilities for Indian alumni of French higher education. Check the current rules with Campus France India.
