Course overview

An MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a postgraduate course for people who want to build careers in management. It covers leadership, strategy, finance, marketing and operations. Many universities abroad also offer specialisations such as international business, finance or healthcare management.

One-year or two-year MBA?

  • One-year MBA: shorter and usually cheaper overall, but more intensive, with less time for internships.
  • Two-year MBA: more time to learn and often a summer internship, but a higher total cost.

MBA or a master's in management?

An MBA usually expects some work experience. A Master in Management (MiM) or MSc in Management is usually meant for fresh graduates with little or no work experience. Check which degree you are actually applying for.

Eligibility & entry requirements

Each university sets its own rules. Most MBA programmes abroad ask for:

  • A bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university.
  • Work experience. Many programmes prefer two years or more. Some accept fresh graduates; others ask for much more experience.
  • GMAT or GRE scores at many universities. Some waive the test based on your academic record or work experience.
  • Proof of English, such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, for English-taught programmes.

Most applications also need a CV, essays or a statement of purpose, reference letters and an interview.

How to apply

  1. Set your goal. Decide the role, industry and country you are aiming for.
  2. Shortlist programmes by format, specialisation, class profile, career support and total cost.
  3. Prepare for tests such as GMAT, GRE and IELTS if the university needs them.
  4. Prepare documents: degree certificate, transcripts, CV, work experience letters, essays, reference letters and passport.
  5. Apply and attend interviews.
  6. Compare offers and funding, then accept one and apply for the student visa.

Costs you should plan for

Plan for tuition, living costs, insurance, travel, application fees and test fees. Read scholarship conditions carefully before you count on them.

Planning MBA abroad for the 2027-28 intake

Most full-time MBA programmes for the 2027-28 year admit students in rounds. The first rounds often close between October and December 2026, and the last rounds in spring 2027, for classes that start between August and October 2027. Some schools also offer a January 2028 intake. Applying in an early round usually gives you better chances for seats and scholarships.

  • Now: take the GMAT or GRE if your schools need it, and book IELTS or TOEFL.
  • October 2026 to April 2027: write essays, get recommendation letters, apply and attend interviews.
  • April to August 2027: compare offers and scholarships, accept one, show funds and apply for the visa.

Executive MBAs are for working professionals and often start at different times, so check each school's calendar.

Career pathways

MBA graduates work in roles such as management, consulting, finance, marketing, operations or their own business. Your results depend a lot on your past experience, your network and the job market.

An MBA does not guarantee a job, a promotion, a salary level or a work visa. Look at the university's real career support and published job reports, and check the country's post-study work rules.

If you plan to use your foreign MBA for higher studies or a government job in India, you may need an equivalence certificate from the UGC.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Your questions, answered.

Can I do an MBA abroad without work experience?

Some MBA programmes accept fresh graduates, but many prefer a few years of work experience. If you have little experience, also look at Master in Management (MiM) courses.

Can I get an MBA abroad without GMAT?

Yes, at some universities. They may waive GMAT or GRE based on your academic record or work experience. Many top programmes still need a test score.

What is the difference between an MBA and MiM?

An MBA is usually for people with work experience. A MiM is usually for fresh graduates. The subjects can look similar, but the class profile and career goals are different.

Is a one-year MBA better than a two-year MBA?

Neither is better for everyone. A one-year MBA saves time and money. A two-year MBA gives more time for internships and career change. Choose based on your goals.

Is work experience required for every MBA?

No. Requirements differ by university and programme format. Check the current admission rules, including how much and what type of experience they expect.

How should I budget for an MBA abroad?

Ask for a written fee list and add accommodation, living costs, insurance, travel and application costs. Check payment dates and any conditions attached to scholarships.
