About YSMU
YSMU began as the medical faculty of Yerevan State University in 1920 and became a separate medical institute in 1930. It is named after Mkhitar Heratsi, a 12th-century Armenian physician known as the father of Armenian medicine. The university runs its own university hospitals and works with clinics across Yerevan. It has trained students from many countries, including India, the Middle East and Europe.
General Medicine (MD Physician)
The programme lasts six years and leads to the MD Physician qualification. International students can choose English, Russian or Armenian tracks. Teaching includes theory, simulation training and clinical subjects:
- Early years: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and other basic sciences, with simulation-based skills training.
- Middle years: pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and introduction to clinical medicine.
- Later years: clinical rotations in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and other specialities in Yerevan's hospitals.
Choose the English track if you plan to practise in India, and confirm in writing that every year is taught in English. You will also learn Armenian to talk to patients.
The MBA (Management) course
YSMU's admissions table separately lists a one-year Management course awarding an MBA. This is a different programme from medicine, with its own entry rules and teaching language. It may suit graduates interested in healthcare management. Check its language, format and award carefully, and remember that formal equivalence in India is handled by the UGC.
