Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) is Moldova's national medical university, in the capital Chișinău. About USMF

The university was founded in 1945, when a medical institute moved to Chișinău after the Second World War. It is named after Nicolae Testemițanu, a surgeon and public health leader who served as rector and as Moldova's health minister. USMF has faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and public health, and trains most of Moldova's doctors. It has a long history of teaching international students, including students from Israel, Romania and India.

Medicine (MD)

The Medicine programme is a six-year full-time course leading to an MD. It follows the European structure: basic sciences in years one and two, pre-clinical subjects in year three, and clinical training in Chișinău's hospitals in the later years. USMF offers teaching for international students; ask the university to confirm that your track is taught in English in every year, as NMC rules require. You will also learn Romanian (Moldova's official language), and Russian is widely understood.

Nursing

An official university interview confirms that USMF offers undergraduate Nursing. Its admission route, duration and language may be different from Medicine, so ask for the current Nursing course details separately. Indian citizens who later want to work as nurses in India need Indian Nursing Council equivalency.

Why students choose USMF

  • Moldova's national medical university with a long history.
  • European-style curriculum and a country that is an EU candidate.
  • Living costs lower than in most of Europe.
  • A calm, safe capital city.

Things to think about

  • Confirm English teaching for every year and the internship arrangement.
  • Learn Romanian for patient contact.
  • Check the NMC licence-eligibility condition for Moldova.

How admission works

Apply through USMF's international admissions office with your Class 12 documents, passport and NEET scorecard. Documents may need apostille and translation. After admission, apply for the study visa and then a residence permit in Moldova.

Fees and costs

Ask for the official 2027-28 tuition for Medicine (and Nursing, if relevant) in writing. Add hostel or rent, food, insurance, residence permit and travel.

Life in Chișinău

Chișinău is Moldova's capital and largest city, known for its green parks and boulevards. It is smaller and quieter than most European capitals, and living costs are low. Romanian is the official language, and Russian is widely spoken. Winters are cold and summers are warm. Most flights from India connect through Istanbul or other European hubs.

Before you apply to Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy

To practise in India later, you need a qualifying NEET-UG result before you join, and the course must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university, teaching in English and eligibility for a medical licence in Moldova. NMC does not approve or list foreign universities, so ask Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy to confirm these points in writing and read the latest notices on nmc.org.in. After graduating you will need to clear the licensing exam (currently FMGE) and a 12-month internship in India. Our MBBS abroad guide covers eligibility, documents, FMGE preparation and careers in detail.
