How to Choose the Right Country for MBBS Abroad in 2027-28

"Which is the best country for MBBS abroad?" There is no single answer. The right country depends on your budget, your NEET and Class 12 marks, how comfortable you are with a new language and climate, and how carefully the course meets NMC rules. This guide groups the main destinations and gives you a simple way to choose.

Step 1: Start with the non-negotiables

  • Qualify NEET-UG if you want to practise in India (NEET 2027 guide).
  • Check the NMC FMGL 2021 rules for every course (simple checklist).
  • Set a realistic six-year budget that includes living costs and a safety margin.

Step 2: Compare the main groups of countries

Russia and Central Asia

Countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have long been popular with Indian students. Many state medical universities have large hospitals and decades of experience with international students. Fees are often moderate. Things to check: the English-medium arrangement in clinical years, cold winters (especially in Siberia), banking restrictions in Russia, and NMC notices — NMC issued an alert note on Uzbekistan dated 1 April 2026.

Armenia and Moldova

Armenia and Moldova offer European-style six-year programmes at state universities such as Yerevan State Medical University and USMF in Chișinău, in safe capital cities with moderate living costs. Check licence eligibility for foreign graduates and English teaching for all years.

European Union: Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Italy

Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Italy offer EU medical degrees. Entry is more competitive: Hungary and Bulgaria use entrance exams, Romania uses file-based selection, and Italy uses the IMAT test with very few non-EU seats. Costs are usually higher than Central Asia, though Italian public universities have low tuition. You will also learn the local language for clinical years.

Asia and Africa: Philippines, Vietnam and Egypt

The Philippines uses English widely, but its MD is graduate-entry after a bachelor's degree, which needs careful NMC checking. Vietnam has newer English-taught MD programmes such as VinUniversity's. Egypt has huge teaching hospitals, but check licence eligibility for foreign graduates.

Step 3: Use this comparison table

Step 4: Shortlist universities, not just countries

Within one country, universities differ a lot. Compare the university's history, hospitals, number of Indian students, hostel, teaching language and graduates' results. Use our university directory to compare options side by side, and read each university's guide.

Step 5: Talk to real students

Ask to speak with current Indian students at your shortlisted universities. Ask about teaching in English, hostel life, food, safety, exam pressure and how they prepare for the FMGE.

Quick tips

  • Do not choose only by the lowest fee.
  • Prefer universities that confirm NMC conditions in writing.
  • Plan for climate: Siberia and Mongolia are very cold; Egypt is very hot.
  • Start language learning before you travel.
