NEET 2027 and MBBS Abroad: What Indian Students Must Know for 2027-28

If you plan to start MBBS abroad in 2027, NEET-UG decides whether you can practise in India later. Here is what the rules say, how long your result is valid and how to plan the 2027-28 intake around it.

NEET 2027 and MBBS Abroad: What Indian Students Must Know for 2027-28

Every year, many NEET candidates who do not get a government MBBS seat in India look at studying medicine abroad. If you are one of them and you want to start in the 2027-28 intake, NEET is the first thing to get right. This guide explains, in simple words, why NEET matters for MBBS abroad, what score you need, how long your result stays valid and how to plan your year.

Is NEET compulsory for MBBS abroad?

Yes, if you are an Indian citizen and you want to practise medicine in India after studying abroad. Since 2018, Indian students must qualify NEET-UG before joining a foreign medical course. If you join without qualifying NEET, you will not be allowed to sit the licensing exam for foreign medical graduates in India, which means you cannot register as a doctor here. The Supreme Court upheld this rule in 2025.

Some foreign universities still admit students without NEET. That admission may be valid in that country, but it closes the door to practice in India. Do not accept any offer of "MBBS abroad without NEET" if your plan is to come back and work in India.

What NEET score do you need?

For foreign medical admission, the rule is to qualify NEET, not to reach a particular rank. Qualifying means scoring at or above the qualifying percentile for your category in that year's exam (in recent years, the 50th percentile for general category candidates, with lower percentiles for reserved categories and candidates with disabilities). The exact cut-off marks change every year, so check the NEET-UG result notice for your year.

Universities abroad may have their own entry rules too. Some ask only for Class 12 marks and a qualifying NEET score; others in Europe run their own entrance exams. A higher NEET score does not usually change your admission abroad, but it is a good sign of how well you have prepared for medical studies.

How long is a NEET result valid for MBBS abroad?

For admission to a foreign medical course, a NEET result is valid for three years from the date it is declared. So if you qualified NEET in 2025 or 2026, you may still be able to use that result for the 2027-28 intake. Check the exact dates with your counsellor before you apply, because the three years are counted from the result date, not the exam year.

When is NEET 2027?

When this guide was written, the National Testing Agency (NTA) had not announced the NEET-UG 2027 date. In recent years, NEET has been held on the first Sunday of May, with registration opening in February and results in June. Watch the official website, neet.nta.nic.in, for the information bulletin, and do not rely on dates from unofficial sources.

A month-by-month plan for the 2027-28 intake

  • October – December 2026: decide on your budget and shortlist countries. Read our country guides, for example MBBS in Russia, MBBS in Kazakhstan and MBBS in Armenia. Get your passport made if you do not have one.
  • January – April 2027: register for NEET when the form opens, and keep preparing. If you are considering Europe, check entrance exam dates for countries such as Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Italy, which can be months before classes start.
  • May 2027: appear for NEET-UG 2027.
  • June – July 2027: check your result. If you qualify, apply to your shortlisted universities and collect documents (marksheets, NEET scorecard, passport, photos, medical certificate).
  • August – October 2027: admission letter, visa, travel and joining. Most universities in Central Asia and Eastern Europe start in September or October.

What if you do not qualify NEET 2027?

If you do not qualify, you cannot join MBBS abroad for practice in India that year. You have three honest options:

  1. Use an earlier NEET result, if you qualified in 2025 or 2026 and it is still within its three-year validity.
  2. Prepare again for NEET 2028, perhaps with a structured drop-year plan.
  3. Consider other health careers, such as Nursing abroad, which do not need NEET for admission abroad.

Beyond NEET: what else to check before choosing a university

Qualifying NEET is only the first step. Your foreign course must also meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university, teaching in English and eligibility for a medical licence in that country. Read our simple explainer, NMC rules for MBBS abroad, before you pay any fee.

Common NEET mistakes to avoid

  • Believing agents who promise admission "without NEET" for practice in India.
  • Waiting for the NEET result before researching countries. Start early so you can apply quickly in June.
  • Forgetting that your NEET scorecard is needed for the visa and for the Indian licensing exam later. Keep several printed and digital copies.
  • Mixing up the NEET qualifying percentile with the cut-off for government colleges in India. For MBBS abroad, qualifying is what matters.
