About Carol Davila University
The university is named after Carol Davila, a doctor who helped found the national school of medicine in Bucharest in 1857 and organised Romania's early health services. Today the university has faculties of medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy and midwifery and nursing, and its teaching staff work in many of Bucharest's major hospitals.
Carol Davila is one of the largest medical universities in South-Eastern Europe. Many Romanian specialists trained here, and its graduates work across Europe.
The Medicine programme in English
The Medicine programme lasts six years (360 ECTS credits). The early years cover anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, cell biology and other basic sciences. Pre-clinical years add pathology, pharmacology and microbiology. The final years are spent mainly in hospitals, in internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and other specialities. Students finish with a licence exam and thesis.
The English module is taught in English, and Romanian language classes help you communicate with patients during clinical training.
Why students choose Carol Davila
- Romania's most famous medical university, in the capital.
- Training in large, busy hospitals with a wide range of cases.
- A six-year EU medical degree.
- Usually lower costs than medicine in Western Europe.
Things to think about
- English places are limited and competitive.
- Bucharest is the most expensive city in Romania.
- Romanian is needed for patient contact, so start learning early.
How admission works
The university publishes an admission methodology for its English programmes every year. For the 2026-27 academic year, the methodology was approved in January 2026 and the calendar listed online registration from 1 April to 6 July 2026, followed by an online interview in English. Admission of foreign citizens to fee-paying places follows Romanian ministry rules. After selection, non-EU students receive a Letter of Acceptance to Studies from the Ministry of Education, pay the first year's tuition and then apply for the visa. Expect a similar calendar for 2027-28, but follow the new methodology when it is published.
Fees and costs
Tuition for the English module is charged in euros and is set in the university's yearly methodology. Get the official 2027-28 fee in writing. Also budget for accommodation (dormitory places are limited, so many students rent), food, insurance, residence permit, document translation and legalisation, and travel.
Life in Bucharest
Bucharest is Romania's capital and largest city, with a metro network, parks, historic buildings and a busy cultural life. It has more international flights than any other Romanian city. Rents are higher than in other Romanian cities but lower than in most Western European capitals. Winters are cold and summers can be very hot.
