About Charité

Charité was founded in 1710 as a plague house and has grown into one of Europe's best-known academic medical centres. It is the joint medical faculty of Berlin's Free University and Humboldt University, and many Nobel Prize winners, including Robert Koch and Paul Ehrlich, worked here. Charité runs several large hospital campuses in Berlin.

The Nursing BSc (Pflege)

The programme is primary-qualifying, which means it leads both to a bachelor's degree and to the professional licence as a nurse in Germany. It lasts seven semesters and combines:

  • Academic nursing education: nursing science, clinical reasoning, health promotion, ethics, communication and research.
  • Practical professional training: supervised practice in Charité's hospitals and other care settings, covering acute care, long-term care, paediatrics, psychiatry and community care.

Because you work closely with patients and teams, the course and placements are in German.

Entry requirements for international applicants

Applicants educated outside Germany should check:

  • Whether their school qualification is recognised as a university entrance qualification in Germany (Indian Class 12 often needs a foundation year or prior university study).
  • The German language evidence Charité requires (plan for an advanced level, usually C1).
  • The current application process, deadlines and any practical training arrangements.

Why students consider Charité

  • One of Europe's most respected academic medical centres.
  • Training in large, modern hospitals with a wide range of specialities.
  • A bachelor's degree plus the German nursing licence.
  • Life in Berlin, Germany's capital and a major international city.

Things to think about carefully

  • Strong German is essential.
  • Places are limited and competitive.
  • Berlin rents have risen sharply; find housing early.

Fees and costs

Public university education in Berlin usually involves a semester contribution rather than tuition. Ask Charité whether the practical training includes an allowance. Plan for proof of funds for the visa, rent, insurance, food and transport.

Life in Berlin

Berlin is Germany's capital and largest city, known for its history, museums, parks and diverse neighbourhoods. It has a large international community, including many Indians working in technology and research. Public transport is excellent. Winters are cold and grey, and summers are warm. Berlin's airport has connections across Europe and to the Gulf, with onward flights to India.

From student to nurse in Germany

When you finish, you take the state examination that forms part of the programme and apply for permission to use the professional title of nurse. With the licence and strong German, you can work in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, care homes and community care across Germany. Many employers also support further study in specialist areas.

Before you apply to Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin

Check the language level you need for both the course and nursing registration, and confirm the entry rules for Indian school certificates. If you want to work as a nurse in India later, you will need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council, so keep your syllabus, transcripts and clinical-hour records from the first year. Our Nursing abroad guide covers eligibility, registration and careers in detail.

2027-28 intake timeline

  • Now – mid-2027: reach C1 German (or the level the university requires) and check whether your school certificate gives direct entry.
  • Early to mid 2027: find a practical training partner if the programme requires one, and apply in the official window.
  • Summer 2027: APS certificate, blocked account and student visa.
  • Autumn 2027: the winter semester starts.
