About Medical University – Varna
The university was founded in 1961 and is named after Professor Paraskev Stoyanov, a Bulgarian surgeon and scholar. It has faculties of medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy and public health, and works with St. Marina University Hospital and other hospitals in Varna. It has invested in simulation centres and digital learning.
The Medicine programme in English
According to the university's official page, the programme lasts six years: ten semesters of study and a one-year state clinical internship of 310 calendar days. Students begin with basic sciences, move through pre-clinical subjects, and then train in clinical departments. The final internship year includes rotations in major specialities before the state exams.
The university states that learning Bulgarian is compulsory during the first three years, so that students can communicate with patients in clinical years.
Why students choose Varna
- A modern state medical university with a large international student body.
- A full-year clinical internship built into the six years.
- An EU degree at a moderate cost.
- Life in a pleasant seaside city with a milder climate than Sofia.
Things to think about
- Bulgarian is compulsory for three years.
- Entry rules, exams and fees change, so read the 2027-28 admission information.
- Varna is quieter in winter than in the summer tourist season.
How admission works
The university's admission pages explain the requirements for international applicants. Bulgarian medical universities usually hold entrance exams in biology and chemistry or review documents, and check English. Contact the international admissions team (uni@mu-varna.bg) for the 2027-28 exam dates, documents and deadlines.
Fees and costs
Tuition is listed on the university's "Tuition fees" page and quoted in euros. Get the 2027-28 figure in writing. Also plan for accommodation, food, insurance, residence permit and travel.
Life in Varna
Varna is Bulgaria's third-largest city and its "sea capital", with beaches, a large sea garden park, museums and a historic centre. Living costs are low by EU standards. Winters are mild compared with inland Bulgaria, and summers are warm and busy with tourists. Varna has an airport with seasonal European flights, and Sofia is about an hour away by air. On weekends, students often visit nearby coastal towns and nature parks, and the city has shopping centres, cinemas and many affordable cafés where students meet after classes.
Preparing for the entrance exam
Bulgarian medical universities usually test biology and chemistry at a level close to Class 11 and 12. Revise NCERT biology and chemistry, practise questions under time limits and ask the university for sample tests. Good English also matters, because you will study every subject in English from the first day.
Arriving in Varna
The university's international office will help you with registration, residence permit, accommodation and orientation. Use the first weeks to start Bulgarian, find the nearest Indian grocery and learn the bus routes between the campus, hostel and hospitals.
Student life at Medical University – Varna
Varna has a large international student community, with student clubs, sports teams and cultural events. Indian students often meet for festivals and help each other with studies and paperwork. The sea garden and beaches are popular places to relax, especially in spring and early autumn. Keep a steady study routine from the first semester, because exams in the basic sciences are strict and need regular revision.
Before you apply to Medical University Varna
To practise in India later, you need a qualifying NEET-UG result before you join, and the course must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university, teaching in English and eligibility for a medical licence in Bulgaria. NMC does not approve or list foreign universities, so ask Medical University Varna to confirm these points in writing and read the latest notices on nmc.org.in. After graduating you will need to clear the licensing exam (currently FMGE) and a 12-month internship in India. Our MBBS abroad guide covers eligibility, documents, FMGE preparation and careers in detail.
