About Monash University

Monash was founded in 1958 and is named after Sir John Monash, an Australian engineer and military leader. It is a member of Australia's Group of Eight research universities and has campuses in Melbourne and overseas. Its Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is one of the largest in Australia.

The Bachelor of Nursing

The Bachelor of Nursing prepares you to apply for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (through Ahpra). It combines:

  • Theory: anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, health assessment, mental health, chronic illness, and ethics and law.
  • Simulation: practising skills in clinical labs with manikins and simulated patients.
  • Clinical placements: supervised practice in hospitals, aged care and community settings across Victoria.

Monash's international course page sets out the qualification and English entry conditions. Confirm the campus, current duration and placement arrangements for your chosen intake. The separate Nursing Honours course has different entry requirements.

Why students consider Monash

  • A highly ranked research university with a strong health faculty.
  • Clinical placements in Victoria's health services.
  • A pathway to registration as a nurse in Australia.
  • Life in Melbourne, with a large Indian community.

Things to think about carefully

  • High English requirements for nursing.
  • Significant tuition and living costs.
  • Placements may be outside central Melbourne and at different hours.

Entry requirements

Expect requirements for Class 12 results at the level Monash lists for Indian applicants, plus English scores. For registration later, the NMBA's English standard is high (for example, IELTS Academic 7 in each band, or equivalent). You will also need immunisations, a police check and a working with children check before placements.

Fees and costs

International tuition is charged per year in Australian dollars. Ask Monash for the 2027-28 fee. Add Overseas Student Health Cover, accommodation, food, transport, placement travel, uniforms and books. The student visa needs proof of funds.

Life in Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia's second-largest city, known for its coffee culture, sport, arts and multicultural food. It has one of the largest Indian communities in Australia. Trams, trains and buses connect the suburbs. The weather changes quickly, with cool winters and hot spells in summer. There are direct flights between Melbourne and Indian cities.

Studying and working

Student visa holders can work limited hours during study periods. Many nursing students work as assistants in nursing or in aged care to gain experience, but study and placements must come first.

A typical week

A typical week as a Monash nursing student mixes lectures and tutorials, skills sessions in clinical labs and self-study. In placement blocks, you work rostered shifts in a hospital or community service in Victoria, guided by a clinical educator. Many students also join the Monash nursing society and peer support groups, which help with study and friendships.

Becoming a registered nurse in Australia, step by step

  1. Complete an approved Bachelor of Nursing, including all clinical placement hours.
  2. Meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's English language standard, if your earlier education does not exempt you.
  3. Apply to Ahpra for registration as a registered nurse, with proof of identity, your qualification and criminal history checks.
  4. Once registered, apply for graduate nurse programmes, which many hospitals run for new nurses in their first year.

Graduate programmes are competitive, so build a good record on placements and ask your university's careers team for help with applications.

Before you apply to Monash University

Check the language level you need for both the course and nursing registration, and confirm the entry rules for Indian school certificates. If you want to work as a nurse in India later, you will need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council, so keep your syllabus, transcripts and clinical-hour records from the first year. Our Nursing abroad guide covers eligibility, registration and careers in detail.
