About Ryazan State Medical University
The university traces its history to a medical institute founded in Moscow in 1943, which moved to Ryazan in 1950. It is named after Ivan Pavlov, the Nobel Prize-winning physiologist who was born in Ryazan and is famous for his work on conditioned reflexes. Today the university trains doctors, dentists, pharmacists and other health professionals, with clinical teaching in Ryazan's hospitals.
The General Medicine programme
General Medicine (31.05.01) is Russia's standard specialist degree for doctors, usually lasting six years. It follows the Russian federal curriculum: basic sciences in the early years, pre-clinical subjects in the middle years, and clinical rotations in hospitals in the later years. The university's admission page asks applicants to confirm the course duration, teaching language and current charges before deciding.
For Indian students, the key question is the teaching language in every year. NMC rules require the whole course to be taught in English. Ask Ryazan to confirm this in writing for international students.
Admission process described by the university
The official admission information asks applicants for their school documents and includes Chemistry and Biology entrance tests. It also describes an interview, an education contract (the agreement that sets your fees and study terms) and the availability of hostel places. Read the education contract carefully before signing it, especially the fee, payment schedule and refund terms.
Why students consider Ryazan
- A medical university named after one of Russia's most famous scientists.
- Close to Moscow, but with lower living costs.
- Hostel accommodation available.
- A quieter historic city that suits focused study.
Things to think about
- Prepare for the Chemistry and Biology entrance tests.
- Confirm the English-medium arrangement and internship structure in writing.
- Life in Ryazan is mostly in Russian, so learn the language early.
Fees and costs
Ask for the 2027-28 tuition, hostel and insurance fees in writing, as set in the education contract. Living costs in Ryazan are lower than in Moscow. Add visa and registration costs, books, winter clothing and travel.
Life in Ryazan
Ryazan is one of Russia's oldest cities, on the Oka river, with a historic kremlin and churches. It is about three to four hours from Moscow by train or car, which makes travel from Moscow airports straightforward. The city is calmer and cheaper than the capital. Winters are cold and snowy, and summers are warm.
Before you apply to Ryazan State Medical University
To practise in India later, you need a qualifying NEET-UG result before you join, and the course must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university, teaching in English and eligibility for a medical licence in Russia. NMC does not approve or list foreign universities, so ask Ryazan State Medical University to confirm these points in writing and read the latest notices on nmc.org.in. After graduating you will need to clear the licensing exam (currently FMGE) and a 12-month internship in India. Our MBBS abroad guide covers eligibility, documents, FMGE preparation and careers in detail.
