About Saratov State Medical University

Medical education in Saratov began in 1909 with the medical faculty of the then-new Saratov University. The medical institute later became independent and is now a state medical university. It carries the name of Vasily Razumovsky, a surgeon who was the first rector of Saratov University. The university has its own clinical hospital and works with hospitals across Saratov.

The faculty has international students, and Saratov has hosted foreign medical students for many years.

The General Medicine programme

General Medicine at Saratov lasts six years. The faculty describes a mix of classroom study, practical placements and training at university clinical facilities:

  • Years 1–2: basic sciences such as anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry and biology.
  • Year 3: pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and introduction to clinical medicine.
  • Years 4–6: clinical subjects including internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, with practice in hospitals.

Ask the university to confirm in writing the teaching language for every year. NMC rules require the whole course to be taught in English, and many Russian universities teach clinical years partly in Russian. You will need Russian with patients in any case.

Why students consider Saratov

  • A long medical tradition and its own clinical hospital.
  • A large regional city with lower living costs than Moscow or Saint Petersburg.
  • Experience teaching international students.

Things to think about

  • Confirm the English-medium arrangement for all six years in writing.
  • Winters are cold, and life is mostly in Russian.
  • Plan fee payments carefully, as foreign bank cards often do not work in Russia.

How admission works

Apply through the university's international admissions office with your Class 12 documents, passport and NEET scorecard. Russian universities may ask for an entrance test or interview for international applicants. After admission, the university applies for your visa invitation; then you apply for the student visa. Get the current admission rules for 2027-28 directly from the university.

Fees and costs

Ask for the official 2027-28 tuition, hostel and insurance fees in writing. Living costs in Saratov are moderate by Russian standards. Add visa and registration costs, books, winter clothing and travel.

Life in Saratov

Saratov is a large city on the right bank of the Volga, about 850 km south-east of Moscow. It has a long riverside embankment, theatres, a conservatory and an old town centre. Public transport is cheap. Winters are cold and snowy, and summers are hot and dry. Most students fly to Moscow and then take a domestic flight or train to Saratov.
