About the University of Debrecen
Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city and has been a centre of learning for centuries, with roots in the Reformed College of Debrecen founded in 1538. The modern university brings together faculties of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, science, engineering, economics and humanities. Its Clinical Centre is one of the largest healthcare providers in the region, which gives medical students wide clinical exposure.
The university has taught medicine in English for many years. Its international programmes are managed through a dedicated coordinating centre that handles admission, enrolment and student support for students from many countries.
The Medicine (MD) programme
The programme lasts 12 semesters and leads to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Students start with basic medical sciences (anatomy, biophysics, chemistry, biology, physiology and biochemistry), move on to pre-clinical subjects such as pathology, microbiology and pharmacology, and then complete clinical subjects in the departments of the Clinical Centre. The final year is spent in practical rotations.
Teaching is in English, and students also learn Hungarian, which they need when talking to patients in clinical years.
Why students choose Debrecen
- A large university with its own clinical centre.
- Lower living costs than Budapest.
- A long-running English medical programme with a large international student community.
- An EU degree from a public university.
Things to think about
- The entrance exam tests your science knowledge, so you need proper preparation.
- Tuition is significant, though often lower than private medical colleges in India.
- Debrecen is quieter than Budapest, which suits some students more than others.
How admission works at Debrecen
According to the university's official medicine page, applicants need a secondary school certificate and must pass a written and oral entrance exam in biology and physics or chemistry, or complete the university's Basic Medicine Course (a preparatory year). English proficiency is assessed during the entrance exam. The page lists an application fee of USD 150 and an entrance procedure fee of USD 350. The university also runs an optional tutoring seminar to help candidates prepare for the exam.
Fees and costs
The official medicine page listed tuition of USD 16,900 per year (2025/26 figures). The 2027-28 fee may be different, so get the current figure in writing before you pay. Also plan for accommodation, food, insurance, residence permit, books and travel. Some Indian students apply for the Hungarian government's Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, which is limited and competitive.
Life in Debrecen
Debrecen is a university city in eastern Hungary with a calm pace of life, green spaces such as the Great Forest (Nagyerdő) next to the campus, and good tram and bus connections. Living costs are lower than in Budapest. Budapest is about two and a half to three hours away by train, and Debrecen has its own international airport. Winters are cold and summers are warm.
Before you apply to University of Debrecen
To practise in India later, you need a qualifying NEET-UG result before you join, and the course must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same university, teaching in English and eligibility for a medical licence in Hungary. NMC does not approve or list foreign universities, so ask University of Debrecen to confirm these points in writing and read the latest notices on nmc.org.in. After graduating you will need to clear the licensing exam (currently FMGE) and a 12-month internship in India. Our MBBS abroad guide covers eligibility, documents, FMGE preparation and careers in detail.
