About the University of Southampton

Southampton's history goes back to the Hartley Institution of 1862, and it received its royal charter as a university in 1952. It is a member of the Russell Group of research universities. Its School of Health Sciences is one of the UK's leading centres for nursing education and research, with placements in Southampton and across the south of England.

The Nursing (Adult) BSc

The course prepares you to work as an adult nurse. It develops:

  • Patient assessment: examining patients, recognising illness and deterioration.
  • Consultation: talking to patients and families, understanding their needs and explaining care.
  • Clinical reasoning: making safe decisions based on evidence.
  • Clinical placements: hospital wards, community nursing and other settings.

Graduates can apply to join the register of the UK's Nursing and Midwifery Council. Confirm the current entry conditions, placement arrangements and the registration process for the country where you intend to work.

Why students consider Southampton

  • A strong research university with a respected health sciences school.
  • A wide range of placements across the south of England.
  • Living costs lower than in London.
  • A coastal city with good links to London.

Things to think about carefully

  • High English and academic requirements.
  • Placements may involve travel to other towns.
  • Overseas tuition is significant.

How to apply

Apply through UCAS by the main equal-consideration deadline in late January 2027 for a September 2027 start. Expect an interview, a personal statement and a reference. After meeting conditions, you receive a CAS for the Student visa.

Fees and costs

Ask Southampton for the 2027-28 overseas tuition and any international scholarships. Add rent, food, transport, the Immigration Health Surcharge, visa fees and placement travel.

Life in Southampton

Southampton is a port city on the south coast, with parks, a historic old town and a large student population. It is about 80 minutes from London by train. Living costs are lower than in London. The climate is mild, and the New Forest national park is nearby. Indian groceries and restaurants are available.

After graduation

Graduates can apply to join the NMC register and work as adult nurses. Many NHS employers sponsor visas for registered nurses. Check current post-study visa rules on GOV.UK when you graduate.

A typical week

A typical week as a Southampton nursing student includes lectures, seminars and skills practice in the clinical simulation suites, alternating with placement blocks where you follow the shift pattern of your ward. The university has an active Indian society and international student support team.

Preparing for your nursing interview

UK nursing interviews check your motivation, values and communication. Be ready to explain why you want to be a nurse, what adult nursing involves, and how you show care, respect and teamwork. Read about the NHS Constitution and its values, and think of examples from school, volunteering or family caring. Practise speaking clearly in English.

Joining the UK register

After you complete the degree, your university confirms that you have met the standards, and you apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You pay a registration fee and make a health and character declaration. Once registered, you can work as a registered nurse in the UK.

Before you apply to University of Southampton

Check the language level you need for both the course and nursing registration, and confirm the entry rules for Indian school certificates. If you want to work as a nurse in India later, you will need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council, so keep your syllabus, transcripts and clinical-hour records from the first year. Our Nursing abroad guide covers eligibility, registration and careers in detail.
