Course overview

Nursing is a professional course that trains you to care for patients in hospitals and the community. Many Indian students now look at Nursing abroad. Before you apply, it is important to understand one thing: getting admission is different from getting permission to work as a nurse.

Common Nursing courses abroad

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (like BSc Nursing) after Class 12.
  • Post-basic or bridging courses for students who already have a nursing diploma (like GNM).
  • Master's degree in Nursing for graduates who want to specialise or teach.

Course names, duration and structure differ by country. Compare the actual subjects and clinical hours, not just the course name.

Clinical training and language

Nursing students spend a lot of time with patients. In many countries, patients speak the local language, even when classes are in English. Ask the university where your clinical training will happen and which language you will need there.

Eligibility & entry requirements

Entry rules depend on the country, university and course level. For a bachelor's degree in Nursing, universities usually ask for:

  • Class 12 pass, often with science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  • Minimum marks set by the university.
  • Proof of English, such as IELTS or another test, if the course is taught in English. Some universities accept other proof; check before you apply.
  • A valid passport and, in some countries, medical fitness or health checks.

For post-basic and master's courses, you will also need your nursing diploma or degree and, sometimes, nursing registration and work experience.

How to apply

  1. Decide your goal. Do you want to work in India, in the study country, or in a third country? This decides which course you should choose.
  2. Shortlist courses. Compare subjects, clinical hours, teaching language and total cost.
  3. Check recognition. Make sure the course can lead to registration where you want to work.
  4. Apply with your marksheets, passport, language test result and any other documents the university asks for.
  5. Read your offer letter and fee schedule carefully.
  6. Apply for the student visa and plan your stay.

Want to work as a nurse in India later?

Indian citizens with a foreign nursing qualification must get equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council (INC) before registering with a State Nursing Registration Council. INC checks each case one by one. Your university must send a filled transcript form directly to INC, and INC charges an equivalency fee. Keep all your course and clinical training records safely.

Planning Nursing abroad for the 2027-28 intake

Nursing intakes differ by country, so start early. For a September 2027 start in the United Kingdom, apply through UCAS. The main UCAS deadline for full consideration usually falls in late January 2027. Canada also mainly starts in September, and many Canadian nursing programmes close applications between December 2026 and March 2027. Australia has intakes around February and July, so you can aim for July 2027 or February 2028. In Germany, the winter semester starts in October, and you will need German language skills for most nursing degrees.

  • Now to December 2026: choose your country, check entry rules, and book IELTS, PTE or a German language course.
  • January to April 2027: submit applications, references and personal statements, and attend interviews.
  • May to August 2027: accept your offer, pay the deposit to the university only, arrange your funds and apply for the visa.

Remember that if you plan to work in India later, you will need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council.

Career pathways

Nursing graduates can work in hospital wards, intensive care, community health, teaching or management, or go for higher studies. But in every country, you must meet the nursing regulator's rules before you can work as a registered nurse.

  • In India: INC equivalency, then registration with your State Nursing Registration Council.
  • In the study country or another country: that country's nursing registration rules, language tests and work visa rules.

A Nursing degree alone does not guarantee registration, a job or a work visa.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Your questions, answered.

Can I study Nursing abroad after Class 12?

Yes. A bachelor's degree in Nursing is open to students who have passed Class 12, usually with science subjects. Each university sets its own marks and language rules.

Can I work as a nurse in India after studying abroad?

Yes, if your qualification is accepted. Indian citizens with a foreign nursing qualification must first get equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council and then register with a State Nursing Registration Council.

Is IELTS required for Nursing abroad?

Many English-taught courses ask for IELTS or a similar test. Some accept other proof of English. If you plan to work as a nurse abroad later, the nursing regulator may also have its own language test rules.

Does studying Nursing abroad allow me to work there?

No, not automatically. Nursing registration, language requirements and work permits are separate from university admission. Check the nursing regulator and immigration rules of that country.

What should I check about clinical training?

Ask where the training takes place, how many hours are included, who supervises you and which language patients speak. Keep a record of your clinical hours for registration later.

How much does Nursing abroad cost?

Costs differ by country and university. Add tuition, hostel, food, insurance, visa and travel to find the full cost. Ask the university for a written fee list.
